How free is a person really without truth? In a world that treats truth as flexible and optional, Jesus Christ declares something radically different: truth is absolute, and only His truth can bring real freedom. In John chapter 8, Jesus exposes the danger of lies, the bondage of sin, and the liberating power of knowing Him. This message confronts false ideas of freedom and points clearly to the only truth that saves, transforms, and sets people free.
“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
John 8:32 (KJV)
Truth in an Age That Rejects It
Truth is quickly becoming unpopular. Dishonesty is common, lying is excused, and many people insist that truth is relative—different for each person. This kind of thinking has no boundaries. If truth is whatever someone decides it is, then anything can be justified.
Scripture stands firmly against that idea. Truth is not personal opinion. Truth is absolute. Right is right, wrong is wrong, and lies remain lies regardless of motive or circumstance. God Himself is the source of all truth. His Word declares it, and Jesus Christ embodies it.
Jesus did not say He was a truth. He said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” Without God’s truth, there can be no real freedom—only deeper bondage.
Free From Sin’s Condemnation
Jesus gives a warning that should shake every lost soul: “If ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins” (John 8:24). There is no worse fate than dying separated from Christ.
Life can bring great suffering—loss, sickness, poverty—but none of those compare to the horror of dying in sin. Job lost wealth, family, and health, yet even in suffering he could say, “I know that my redeemer liveth.” He knew the truth, and the truth had made him free.
True freedom begins with salvation. Until a person trusts Christ, there is no peace for the mind, no rest for the heart, and no escape from condemnation. Jesus alone is the way to the Father, and believing Him is the only path to freedom.
Free From Sin’s Bondage
Salvation is not the end of the journey—it is the beginning. Jesus told believers that freedom continues as they abide in His Word. Knowing Scripture without obeying it leads to stagnation, not growth.
Sin always seeks to enslave. It does not always appear in obvious forms. Pride, jealousy, bitterness, and neglect of spiritual responsibility can bind a believer just as tightly as open rebellion.
Some believers feel free because they see no outward chains, yet they find themselves unable to grow, serve, witness, or love as they should. Sin’s grip—especially sins of omission—can quietly imprison the child of God.
Freedom comes through obedience. Continuing in God’s Word renews the mind, restores usefulness, and releases believers from spiritual paralysis.
Free From Satan’s Influence
Before salvation, every person belongs to the kingdom of darkness. Through Christ, believers are adopted into the family of God. That change demands a clean break from old affiliations.
Satan thrives on lies and division. When believers hold onto attitudes, habits, or influences rooted in their past life, spiritual growth is hindered. Truth is the only force that breaks these ties.
God’s Word calls believers to walk in wisdom, rejecting influences that are earthly, sensual, and demonic. A person cannot walk in the Spirit while clinging to the flesh. When truth governs the heart, Satan’s hold is broken.
Conclusion
The power of truth is unmistakable. Through Jesus Christ, truth brings real freedom:
- Freedom from sin’s condemnation
• Freedom from sin’s bondage
• Freedom from Satan’s influence
Christ does not offer partial freedom or temporary relief. He offers complete liberation. When a person comes to Him in faith, the truth does exactly what Jesus promised—it makes them free.
A Call to Respond
Truth demands a decision. If you have never trusted Jesus Christ as Savior, do not delay. To reject Him is to remain in bondage; to believe Him is to be set free.
If you are a believer struggling with sin, fear, or spiritual stagnation, return to God’s Word. Freedom is restored through obedience, repentance, and trust in Christ.
