Good Soldiers of the Lord: 4 Marks of a Faithful Christian Life

As we approach Memorial Day, our hearts turn toward remembrance. It is a time dedicated to honoring our fallen heroes—the brave men and women who paid the supreme price to secure and protect America’s freedoms. We owe an immense debt of gratitude and respect to the tens of thousands who lie silent in the grave so that we can enjoy the liberties we have today.
We also give thanks for the good soldiers serving right now, defending our nation with the best training, technology, and dedication in the world. They are our heroes, and we pray for God's blessings on them and the families who share the weight of their sacrifice.
But as born-again believers, we must ask ourselves another vital question: What about the soldiers of the Lord who gave their all for the cause of Christ?
We owe a debt of gratitude to the spiritual giants who came before us. I think of my all-time favorite pastor, Dr. Adams, who passed away a few years ago. He was the president of the college I attended and taught several of my classes. A huge part of who I am today is because of his investment and the faithfulness of others who have already gone home to glory.
We honor their memory by picking up the mantle. The Apostle Paul reminds us that every true believer has been called to standard duty:
📖 "Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ." (2 Timothy 2:3)
We are called to be "Good Soldiers" so that a watching world can look at our lives and understand that there is a living God—and that He sent His Son to die for our sins. In 2 Timothy 2:1-5, Paul gives us a clear operational briefing on how to fulfill this calling. A good soldier of the Lord is marked by four distinct characteristics.
- A Good Soldier Is Strong in Grace
📖 "Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus." (2 Timothy 2:1)
Grace is God’s unmerited, undeserved favor. But there is a massive difference between simply receiving grace and actively possessing and walking in that grace.
God’s general grace is everywhere. If you take a deep breath right now, you are breathing God’s air—that’s His grace. It’s in the sunshine, the rain, the oceans, and the hills. All of creation is wrapped in it. But His most amazing grace brought us Jesus: the God-Man born of a virgin, who endured rejection, false charges, and a brutal death on a cross to pay for our sins free of charge.
Saving grace is the ultimate gift, but God's grace does not stop the moment you get saved!
Too many believers live in a legalistic "fleshly circle of failure," constantly worrying that they have to fight day and night to keep a salvation that Jesus already paid for in full. Paul corrected this exact error in the Galatian church, asking, 📖 "Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?" (Galatians 3:2-3).
A good soldier doesn't hoard or worry over their grace; they let it overflow. Jesus promised, 📖 "He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water." (John 7:38). The grace given to us isn't meant to be hidden or held back. Being strong in grace means letting kindness, gentleness, love, and encouragement flow out from us into the lives of everyone we meet.
- A Good Soldier Is Sound in the Word
📖 "And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also." (2 Timothy 2:2)
The devil loves to whisper, "Everyone is entitled to their own truth, even inside the church." But God's word says otherwise. Paul instructs us to take the absolute, unchanging truth we have received and delegate it to faithful people who will preserve and teach it to the next generation.
God never gave us His Truth so that we could change it, reject it, or neglect it based on our personal preferences. Only sound doctrine has the power to truly help and transform lives. This is why God establishes teachers and leaders in the local body—to keep the church anchored in stability. When a church removes absolute truth from its pulpit and classrooms, it effectively removes God's light and spiritual authority.
Learning God's Word is not a game. We are commanded to be workmen who handle the truth accurately:
📖 "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness." (2 Timothy 2:15-16)
Soldiers who ignore this command end up with nothing but empty religion. They display what Paul calls a 📖 "form of godliness, but denying the power thereof" (2 Timothy 3:5). They have the outward "outline" of a Christian, but zero spiritual power to make a difference because they've rejected the source of that power: God's absolute truth.
- A Good Soldier Is Steadfast in the Work
📖 "Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ." (2 Timothy 2:3)
A good soldier understands that they are deployed in a real spiritual war, and they prepare themselves for difficult times. War is never easy or convenient. If a deployment were comfortable, it wouldn't be a battle! Recognizing that we face daily battles is simply proof that we are on the front lines.
First Timothy 6:12 charges us to: 📖 "Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called."
Laying hold on eternal life doesn’t mean clutching onto your salvation out of fear that it might slip away. Eternal life means you are already secure! Through Christ, the ultimate victory is already won. We are already the children of the Most High God, citizens of heaven, and entirely safe from the lake of fire for all eternity.
Knowing this truth gives us the rock-solid assurance to stand firm. When you know the final outcome of the war is secured, you can abound in the work without shaking. As 1 Corinthians 15:58 anchors us, "Be ye steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord."
- A Good Soldier Is Set-Apart From the World
📖 "No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully." (2 Timothy 2:4-5)
The primary objective of any good soldier is to please their commander. The Christian life is not about what you or I want; it is entirely about Jesus and what He wants. He is the Creator of all things, the Savior who died for us, and the Commander who gave us our operational manual—the Bible.
A soldier cannot fight effectively if they are constantly entangling themselves with the habits and mindsets of the enemy. James warns us plainly: 📖 "Know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God." (James 4:4).
If we walk in the counsel of the ungodly or pull up a seat with the cynical, we become part of the problem rather than part of the harvest (Psalm 1:1). The good soldier stays within the boundaries of the rulebook, keeping their life clean and aligned with their holy calling. At the end of the day, it is our Commander who honors the hardworking, faithful servant.
What Kind of Soldier Are You?
We are all enrolled in this spiritual reality, but the question we must ask ourselves on this weekend of remembrance is simple: What kind of soldiers are we?
God hasn't called us to be passive observers or AWOL believers. He has called us to be Good Soldiers—strong in His grace, sound in His Word, steadfast in His work, and set-apart from the world's entanglements.
Let's honor those who came before us by standing firm at our posts this week, fully committed to the service of our Great Commander.
If you are looking to equip yourself for the spiritual battles of life, join us this Sunday at Town East Baptist Church. We have a place for you in the ranks as we study God's Word and serve our community together!
